Acne
The main contributing factor to acne is excess oil/sebum production, which is caused by hormonal influences on sebaceous glands. The increase of oil/sebum production leads to dead skin cells physically blocking pores which in turn causes blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and deeper lumps called cysts or nodules. A bacterium named Propionibacterium acnes (p.acnes) has been implicated in exasperating the skin condition.

Age & Sun Spots
Excessive exposure to UV radiation can lead to freckles, sun spots and age spots. The body’s natural defensive response to sun exposure is to create pigment. These spots are more prominent in individuals with fair skin or increased genetic disposition. These spots become more visible and increase in numbers with time as the damage from the sun accumulates. They are usually brown, gray or black spots and can vary in size. Majority of these spots are harmless and can be cosmetically lightened to improve their appearance.

Ageing Skin & Wrinkles
Ageing of skin results from the deterioration of structures in the skin and the slowing of healthy skin functions. Skin aging is influenced by both extrinsic and intrinsic factors. With time, skin becomes notably thinner with decrease in volume and elasticity. Its ability to synthesize collagen and elastin is reduced and cell turnover rate is slowed. Eventually, fine lines and wrinkles will form on our skin.

Pigmentation
Skin gets its colour from a pigment called melanin. Melanin can be stimulated by environmental, hormonal and/or genetic factors and each will determine the amount, type, and distribution in the skin. Pigmentation can be classified as epidermal (superficial), dermal (deep), or a mixture of the two. As a result treatment plans aimed at reducing and improving unwanted pigmentation are determined upon the type of pigmentation, patient risk tolerance (risk of PIHP) and patient preference.

Scarring
Scars are produced by the natural biological healing process after an injury to the deeper layer of the skin, the dermis. The healing process results in an altered formation of collagen fibers which are cross-linked as opposed to the normal basketweave formation. The appearance of scars can differ due to the nature of the trauma, anatomical location of the wound and genetic factors.

Spider Veins
Dilated blood vessels (also referred to as broken capillaries/vessels/spider veins) appear as persistent thread-like lines underneath the skin surface. They can appear in different colours (red, blue, purple), are usually less than 0.2 millimeters in width. Though they found in different places over the face and body, they are often seen on cheeks, nose and the chin. In some cases, large number of capillaries are clustered together to form an appearance of a red patch or a bruise that may be permanent.

Skin Pores
Pores are small openings in the skin that allow sweat and oil to be released to the surface of skin. Contrary to popular belief, skin pore size cannot be changed. They can appear enlarged or “open” due to blockage of the pore, and excessive dirt and oil build-up can result in acne or other skin issues. Though pores size cannot be changed, there are treatments available to minimise their appearance.
